1. What is the 12.5.1 release?

12.5.1 is a shelf-copy replacement for the current 12.5 release. 12.5 is not being end-of-lifed, but is being replaced by 12.5.1. 12.5 first went GA over two years ago, and several EBFs (IRs and/or ESDs) have been released since that time, with hundreds of bug fixes and over 20 feature enhancements to both Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) and Open Client/Server (OC/S). While the next major release for ASE and Open Client/Server is still in the works, there is strong customer demand to include some new features, in addition to bringing our master CD up-to-date with all the fixes available to date. Hence the need for a version that will replace the old software with current fixes and a few new features.

2. What products were released on 12.5.1?

There are 12.5.1 releases of ASE, SDK and Open Server. ASE 12.5.1 was released in mid-August 2003, and SDK and Open Server in January 2004. The .NET Data Provider for ASE was shipped as part of SDK 12.5.1 for Windows.

3. What are the release platforms?

The release platforms are, for the most part, the same as they were for the 12.5 release. Refer to the certification reports for additional Operating System version certifications for 12.5.1. In addition, ASE, SDK and Open Server 12.5.1 are now also available on the HP Itanium and Linux Itanium platforms.

Notes:

  • Win 98 is no longer supported for PC Client or SDK/Open Server
  • There are no plans to release SDK or Open Server 12.5.1 point products on Mac OS X 10.3. ASE 12.5.1 includes an updated SDK 12.5.1 as a component. It is fully functional, but there will be no separate point product for SDK or Open Server on this platform. Instead, the 12.5 versions of the point products have been certified on Mac OS X 10.3.
  • ASE 12.5.1 is available on the Solaris x86 platform. For now, there will be no SDK or Open Server point product releases on this platform.

4. What new features are available in ASE 12.5.1?

Refer to the document What?s New in Adaptive Server Enterprise 12.5.1?. Also see the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 12.5.1 New Features Guide at http://www.sybase.com/detail?id=1013017

5. What is ASE 12.5.2?

ASE 12.5.2 is a maintenance release (MR), which means you can install the new binaries over your existing 12.5.1 or 12.5 installation. ASE 12.5.2 contains some new features, several enhancements to existing functionality, bug fixes to several known problems, and is a replacement for ASE 12.5.1. Some of the new features include:

  • Statement Cache
  • IPv6 Support
  • Compressing database dumps
  • Dumping and loading databases with password encryption
  • Large memory support for 32-bit Linux
In addition, PC-Client will include the full development version of SDK (CT-Library, DB-Library, ESQL, .NET Data Provider for ASE and ODBC/OLEDB runtime). ASE 12.5.2 is scheduled for release mid-to-late Q2, 2004. Refer to the document What's New in ASE 12.5.2 when ASE 12.5.2 is released for details.

Note:
ASE 12.5.2 will ship with SDK 12.5.1 + ESD #2. There is no maintenance release for either SDK or Open Server at this time.

6. Are 12.5.1 and 12.5.2 releases an upgrade from 12.5?

No, these releases are not a true upgrade because no migration is involved. Simply install the 12.5.1 or 12.5.2 release in a new directory or over an existing 12.5 installation. Both 12.5.1 and 12.5.2 are similar to an ESD (very similar to an IR for ASE), except that many more files will be installed. For 12.5.1, this includes the entire SDK component, the locales, charsets, etc. For ASE, it is a binary replacement of the files. Backward compatibility is guaranteed to 12.5.0.3. For Open Client/Server, the application will use the new libraries in a manner similar to ESDs (see below). Backward compatibility is guaranteed to 12.5. Although Net-Library has been completely re-architectured, there are no changes to user-APIs. No code changes are required on your part. You are advised to run the same tests that you would normally run prior to applying an ESD. Remember that backup procedures of an existing release prior to a new installation must be observed as always.

7. Will customers have to rebuild their Open Client/Server applications?

For Open Client/Server applications, the process is identical to that for ESDs. Once 12.5.1 has been installed, 12.5 dynamically linked applications will be able to run as usual and will pick up the new libraries. Statically linked 12.5 applications will need to be re-linked with the new libraries, just as they would with a new ESD. No recompilation with the header files is required - just as for ESDs. However, if you are upgrading from a pre-12.5 release to 12.5.1, a complete recompile and re-link with the 12.5.1 header files and libraries is required.

8. What new features are available in Open Client/Server 12.5.1?

Refer to section 4.1 on "New features for SDK and Open Server version 12.5.1" in the Release Bulletin for Open Client and Open Server 12.5.1 for a list of new features.

9. Is there a new installer for this release?

Yes, ASE, Open Client/Server (SDK & Open Server) and Rep Server 12.6 (released in January 2004) will all use a new installer. This is the InstallShield based installer, which will be used for both GA and ESD releases.

10. Will EBFs continue to be released for 12.5?

No, there will be no more EBFs (ESDs or IRs) for ASE 12.5 GA, SDK 12.5 GA or Open Server 12.5 GA. Bug fixes will be provided only for currently supported releases. For ASE, this means that bug fixes will be made to 12.5.1 (and 12.5.2, starting May 2004); for SDK and Open Server, fixes will be made to the 12.5.1 release. Install the base release first and then the EBF. Customers are encouraged to install and use the latest release of a product as soon as possible to avail themselves of the latest fixes and new features.

11. How can I obtain ASE, SDK or Open Server products?

You may order full product releases of ASE, SDK or Open Server (GA releases) from Customer Service. Customers with valid technical support contacts may also download the product from the Sybase Product downloads Center at https://sybase.subscribenet.com. A link to Sybase Product Download Center (SPDC) is available from http://www.sybase.com/downloads.

EBFs continue to be available on the Sybase downloads site to registered technical support contacts. Both GA and EBF releases are also available on CD-ROM by order from Customer Service.

Note:
If you are a Sybase ASE customer not explicitly licensed for the SDK point product, you are entitled to SDK EBFs as SDK is a component of ASE. However, if you wish to download SDK 12.5.1 GA, please contact Sybase Technical Support. If you have a separate SDK point product license, you can order the product from Customer Service or download the product from the Sybase Product Download Center.

12. What is the "ASE Edition" of SDK?

Note that the SDK component of ASE 12.5.1 has the words "ASE Edition" embedded in the version strings of all the SDK binaries and libraries. This is simply to differentiate the SDK from the point product that was released later. ASE customers who require fixes to any Connectivity bugs (bcp, isql, CT-Library, DB-Library, ESQL and so on) will need to install the SDK ESD over the 12.5.1 release. It is recommended that the SDK ESD be installed over the SDK 12.5.1 GA. ASE 12.5.2 will include the point product version of SDK 12.5.1 + ESD #2 and, therefore, will no longer include `ASE Edition' in the version strings of the SDK component files.

13. Is ASE 12.5.1 or 12.5.2 compatible with SDK and Open Server 12.0 or 12.5?

Yes. You may continue to run your Open Client/Server applications at the current 12.x level, without moving to ASE 12.5.1 or 12.5.2. However, the older 12.5 version must be under a separate SYBASE installation. Do not mix and match versions. Keep in mind that all bug fixes will only be included in the 12.5.1 release for SDK and Open Server. There will be no further EBFs for 12.5.

14. Can ASE, SDK, Open Server and Rep Server all be installed in the same SYBASE directory?

Yes, 12.5.1 (or higher) versions of ASE, SDK, Open Server and Rep Server 12.6 can safely be installed in the same SYBASE directory. You cannot mix and match other versions. To be specific, you cannot install a product using InstallShield into a directory that contains a product that was installed using the older Studio Installer. All products in the directory must be installed using compatible InstallShield versions.

For example, if you have a directory that contains both ASE and Replication Server 12.5, you cannot upgrade only the ASE to 12.5.1. Replication Server must also be upgraded to 12.6 using InstallShield at the same time. The Replication Server 12.6 Installation Guide for your platform has more information on this subject.

15. Are PC-Client and SDK the same?

No, they are different. PC-Client contains several Sybase products such as SDK, Sybase Central, ASE Plug-ins, Language modules, Character Sets, jConnect, InfoMaker, PowerDesigner Physical Architect and PowerTransfer. The SDK shipped with PC-Client through version 12.5.1 is only the runtime version. The full development version of SDK will be shipped with PC-Client starting with the ASE 12.5.2 release. It will include the same components as the SDK for Windows point product.

Only the DLLs are shipped with the current runtime version. The header files required to compile an application are not provided, so a user cannot develop applications using the PC-Client 12.5.1 SDK. The development version that will be in  PC-Client 12.5.2 will include all header files and libraries, including debug libraries, needed to develop a Sybase Open Client application.

The SDK point product contains Open Client DB-Library/C, Open Client Client-Library/C, Embedded SQL/C, Embedded SQL/COBOL, XA-Library, Language Modules, Character Sets and jConnect. The .NET Data provider for ASE is also included with SDK for Windows, version 12.5.1 and up.

Note:
Some components may be available only on certain platforms.

16. Does the PC-Client component of ASE EBFs contain SDK fixes?

No. As stated above, PC-Client contains several product components. The bug fixes for each component (SDK being one) will be available under the corresponding point product. For example, fixes to SDK-related bugs (for example, bcp, isql, CT-Library, .NET Data Provider, etc.) will be available in SDK EBFs. All PC-Client customers are entitled to SDK EBFs for the PC Windows platform. EBFs may be ordered on CD from Customer Service or downloaded from http://www.sybase.com/downloads.

17. What fixes do SDK EBFs contain for ASE customers?

SDK EBFs contain fixes to connectivity utilities like bcp, isql, defncopy and dsedit, among others. They also contain fixes to the Open Client components (DB-Library, CT-Library, XA and ESQL). On PC Windows, they also contain fixes to the .NET Data Provider for ASE and ODBC/OLEDB. Customers who use PC-Client SDK will need to obtain fixes to SDK issues via SDK EBFs.

18. Is Open Server part of ASE or SDK?

No. Open Server is a separate point product which is not included with ASE or SDK. If you wish to develop Open Server-based applications, you must purchase this product. Open Server contains the Server-Library and Client-Library components, in addition to the Connectivity Utilities such as isql, bcp, dsedit, and so on. It does not contain DB-Library, ESQL/C, ESQL/COBOL, jConnect or the .Net Data Provider for ASE.

19. Can we have multiple SYBASE installations on the same machine?

Multiple SYBASE installations can exist on the same machine, but you need to be careful, especially on PC platforms. If installing more than one product, be sure to install compatible versions of these products into the common SYBASE. Note that this is not a new issue and is discussed in older documentation, such as the 12.5 Windows Release Bulletin for Replication Server.

On UNIX, create separate directories for different versions of the product(s). Set the SYBASE variable and other environment variables such as DSQUERY, PATH, SYBASE_OCS and load library path (LD_LIBRARY_PATH on Solaris, LIBPATH on IBM AIX, etc.)

On Windows, since registry settings and environment variables are set at a 'machine' level, extra consideration must be taken in getting them all to work (for example, using .bat files to start servers and reset environment variables). See the Installation Guide SDK and Open Server 12.5.1 for Microsoft Windows, Chapter 2 Installing SDK and Open Server, section "Installing 12.5.1 on the same machine as a pre-12.5.1 ASE."

20. How can I get a copy of the .NET Data Provider for ASE?

The .NET Data Provider for ASE is shipped with SDK 12.5.1 for Windows. ASE 12.5.2 will contain the .NET Provider as part of PC-Client.
